Flores sapientiores quam ego I was listening to a Radiolab podcast episode where one of the host was describing a band called “Dawn of MIDI”. Their whole schtick was that they played extremely repetitive music that slowly morphed over the course of a whole album, but everything was done live, with live musicians, and live instruments. One of the founding members talked about how the invention of computerized and sequenced music allowed us to expand our understand of what we could do with music. Before that, no musician would play a set of eighth notes repeatedly for 45 minutes. But once we had computers do it, it opened entirely new doors of what music could sound like. Dawn of Midi realized that while computes showed us we could do it, having humans replicate the would bring into an entirely new level of meditation and imperfection. Something totally human made out of something totally computerized. As we delve further into the Wild West of AI, I’ve been thinking about what this means for photography and art in general. I’ve spent a lot of the last few years trying to understand Photoshop and midjourney and the likes because I know there’s no escaping it, and it’s a lot harder to be scared of something you know. This little series was all of that wrapped up into multiple exposure medium format photos of dead and fake flowers. I wanted to create repetition, imperfection, and patterns without any technological help (minus scanning the film). Flowers have become a great symbol not just for me but for humans since our dawning. But I’ll talk about that more in a future post. Until then, life is way too complex and it’s only gonna get denser.
